COVID, Kids, and Safe Schools

In our series of conversations among grassroots leaders, this next topic explores equity and safe return to schools during a time of pandemic.
The Chicago Teachers Union has forced Chicago Public Schools to make some concessions to go back to in-person classroom teaching. There are important and potentially life-saving protections and gains in the deal that 70% of the CTU members just ratified, which they only achieved because of their principled and brave collective action. Still, teachers recognize that this is not an agreement that teachers, students, parents deserve to guarantee a true safe return and equity. Gaps in the agreement leave many in danger, make remote learning worse for the majority, and pose an uncertain future for teachers who face discipline for daring to confront the city about its vindictive plan to re-open schools. Over 100 Local School Councils, most of the City Council and a large number of parents opposed the mayor’s plan that was driven by collusion with her corporate backers.
