Statement by the League of Revolutionaries for a New America
The recent indictment of 94-year-old former Cuban president Raúl Castro by a federal grand jury in Miami rests on a ludicrous allegation that Cuba poses a security threat to the United States.
Castro is accused of giving the order to shoot down two U.S. planes manned by members of CIA-backed operation called “Brothers to the Rescue” that were flying unauthorized into Cuban airspace in 1996, after ignoring Cuba’s warnings not to. The United States did not pursue this until now, when a pretext to invade the island was needed.
Cuba has endured over 65 years of hostility from Washington, in addition to the blockade. The biggest blow came in January, when the U.S. military invaded Venezuela, abducted its president and seized control of the country's oil industry, cutting off Cuba's chief source of oil. Thirty-two Cubans were among those killed defending Venezuela and Cuba now faces its worst energy crisis in years.
Cubans have experienced some of the harshest times since the special period in the 1990s but they continue to stand in solidarity with their revolutionary socialist government and together they have survived.
U.S. EMPIRE DIES HARD
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference in February quite candidly laid out a vision that held the European and early U.S. colonial world order of centuries past as the exemplar for the United States in the 21st century. Cuba has long been a thorn in the side of that mythical world order.
After the defeat of the Batista dictatorship in 1959, Cuba nationalized and took over its oil and sugar industries from wealthy Cuban families and U.S. corporations that had exploited Cuba’s working poor and sent the profits abroad. The government and people wiped out illiteracy in a single year – 1961 – and developed a world-renowned system of free, universal, community-based health care. It has successfully defended its independence from imperialist domination for 67 years.
The League stands for a vision of a new society and recognizes that there needs to be a government that functions in the people’s interests. The Cuban people deserve the right to determine what that means for them, just as we do here. We must stand unequivocally against our government’s efforts that threaten their existence.

La reciente acusación contra el expresidente cubano Raúl Castro, de 94 años, por parte de un gran jurado federal en Miami, se basa en la absurda alegación de que Cuba representa una amenaza para la seguridad de Estados Unidos.
Se acusa a Castro de haber dado la orden de derribar dos aviones estadounidenses —tripulados por miembros de la operación «Hermanos al Rescate», respaldada por la CIA. Los aviones volaban sin autorización el espacio aéreo cubano en 1996, tras haber hecho caso omiso de las advertencias de Cuba para que no lo hicieran. Estados Unidos no había tomado medidas al respecto hasta ahora, momento en que surgió la necesidad de un pretexto para invadir la isla.
Cuba ha soportado más de 65 años de hostilidad por parte de Washington, además del bloqueo. El golpe más duro se produjo en enero, cuando el ejército estadounidense invadió Venezuela, secuestró a su presidente y tomó el control de la industria petrolera del país, cortando así la principal fuente de petróleo de Cuba. Treinta y dos cubanos perdieron la vida defendiendo a Venezuela, y Cuba se enfrenta ahora a su peor crisis energética en años.
Los cubanos han vivido algunos de los momentos más difíciles desde el «periodo especial» de la década de 1990, pero mantienen su solidaridad con su gobierno socialista revolucionario y, juntos, han logrado sobrevivir.
EL IMPERIO ESTADOUNIDENSE SE RESISTE A MORIR
El discurso del secretario de Estado de EE. UU., Marco Rubio, en la Conferencia de Seguridad de Múnich celebrada en febrero, expuso con total franqueza una visión que tomaba el orden mundial colonial de siglos pasados como modelo a seguir para Estados Unidos en el siglo XXI. Cuba ha sido durante mucho tiempo una espina clavada en el costado de ese mítico orden mundial.
Tras la derrota de la dictadura de Batista en 1959, Cuba nacionalizó y asumió el control de sus industrias petrolera y azucarera, arrebatándoselas a familias cubanas adineradas y a corporaciones estadounidenses que habían explotado a la clase trabajadora pobre de la isla y enviado las ganancias al extranjero. El gobierno y el pueblo erradicaron el analfabetismo en un solo año —1961— y desarrollaron un sistema de salud gratuito, universal y de base comunitaria reconocido mundialmente.
Durante 67 años, el país ha defendido con éxito su independencia frente a la dominación imperialista.
La Liga defiende la visión de una nueva sociedad y reconoce la necesidad de un gobierno que actúe en interés del pueblo. El pueblo cubano tiene derecho a determinar qué significa esto para él, al igual que nosotros aquí. Debemos oponernos inequívocamente a las acciones de nuestro gobierno que amenazan su existencia.
